Muslim Outrage at Desecration of Qu’ran – President Bush Must Take Responsibility

15 May 2005

The Muslim Council of Britain views with outrage the report first aired by Newsweek magazine that regarding US interrogators at the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention centre:
‘Investigators … have confirmed some infractions alleged in internal FBI e-mails that … Interrogators, in an attempt to rattle suspects placed Qur’ans on toilets and in, at least one case flushed a holy book down the toilet. An army spokesman confirms that ten interrogators have been disciplined for mistreating prisoners.’ (Newsweek, 9 May 2005)

We understand that such reprehensible actions will be viewed with repugnance by many ordinary Americans. However, the United States government from President Bush downwards must take responsibility for the anti-Muslim climate they have been fostering through their actions; Guantanamo Bay itself is a scandal of the highest order. The United States’ ill-concealed contempt for international law has created a culture where some of its officials feel able to denigrate the faith of Islam and the sensibilities of Muslims with impunity. It should not have taken the deaths of seven people – to date – for the US to pledge firm action on this vile matter. We urge the sane elements in the administration to pull America out of a situation that does no good to the country, its image and its own long term interests” said Iqbal Sacranie, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain.
