MCB expresses concern over escalating violence in India

1st March 2002

Following the attacks carried out on innocent lives in India, the MCB is urging the government of India to ban extreme elements of groups such as the VHP (World Hindu Council) and the RSS, who are responsible for sectarianism and communalism policies. The army must also be deployed as a matter of urgency in all the sensitive areas.

We urge India’s Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to ensure that the proposed building of a temple by the VHP on the ruins of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya is stopped at all costs to prevent further bloodshed.

There are tens of thousands of British Muslims originating from Gujerat, India and who have family in India. There is much anxiety and serious concern as to the safety of their relatives. Prayers are being said for peace and calm to be restored.

The MCB is seeking to meet India’s High Commissioner as soon as possible and has been in talks with the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw urging him to exercise his influence.
